284-305 AD: Diocletian divides Rome .
Diocletian pondered the state of Rome in a season of discontent. " it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, the Barbarians kept destruction a foot, the din of the people stifled Rome....How must I get rid of these muckrakers?"
